An intellectual dialogue dedicated to the book “Corruption: What Everyone Needs to Know” was held

An intellectual dialogue dedicated to the essence and significance of the book “Corruption: What Everyone Needs to Know” by economist Ray Fisman and political scientist Miriam A. Golden was held with the participation of the Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency Akmal Burkhanov and the Director of the Youth Affairs Agency Alisher Sadullaev.

This book was published in the Uzbek language for the first time within the framework of the “1000 BOOKS” project, in which corruption is deeply analyzed from socio-economic and political perspectives based on foreign experiences.

The work explains where, why, and in what forms corruption arises through simple and understandable examples. The authors interpret corruption not merely as a violation of the law by individuals, but as a systemic problem. It is noted that its roots are connected to the insufficiency of control mechanisms and a low level of openness and transparency. Also, the role of public control, the media, and civil society institutions is specifically emphasized.

Openness, accountability, and digitalization are shown as important tools for reducing corruption. During the dialogue with the youth, the Director of the Agency noted that the institutional reforms and transparency mechanisms promoted in the work are in harmony with the anti-corruption policy, openness, and digital control systems being implemented in Uzbekistan.

“Limiting the fight against corruption only to punitive measures means failing to reach the root of the problem. Therefore, we must strengthen a systemic approach against this evil, primarily through prevention, deep institutional reforms, and effective management. Most importantly, increasing social responsibility in society and making integrity a priority value is the most effective and sustainable solution in this regard. Notably, these very approaches are extensively covered on a scientific basis in this book,” said Akmal Burkhanov.

At the end of the meeting, proposals were made to increase the translation of such popular science literature within the framework of the “1000 BOOKS” project, as well as to further strengthen anti-corruption measures taking into account the suggestions of youth and experts.
